About GRC, The Scrapstore, & City Works

The Scrapstore and the City Works venue at Alfred Street, Gloucester, are run by The Gloucestershire Resource Centre (GRC) to promote the principles of ‘re-use’ through arts, education, and play in a vibrant environmentally conscious venue for social enterprise, businesses, and community groups to create, meet, and work.

We share aspirations with the other Scrapstores and Resource Centres operating throughout the UK to:

  • enrich children’s play experiences;
  • encourage participation in creative activities for all ages;
  • stimulate the imagination;
  • nurture invention and resourcefulness;
  • promote the re-use of surplus materials generated by businesses.

Our charity status

The Gloucestershire Resource Centre (Charity Number 1047985) has been providing the Scrapstore service to the county since 1986 and is one of the most established Scrapstores in the country.

In 1992 a capital fundraising campaign was launched to help find a permanent home for the Charity. City Works was purchased in 1995 and refurbished over the following six years at a total cost of £708,000. It was an ambitious endeavour at the time but proved to be worthwhile as City Works enables us to generate a significant amount of our annual income.

Charitable financial donations

We still have funds to raise every year so if you would like to contribute funding to the GRC, please get in touch with Beth Hill, Chief Executive Officer, who will give you all the information you need.

Where communities meet

City Works is not only an excellent place to house the Scrapstore but home as well to numerous arts and community organisations and small enterprises whose activities all contribute to the vibrancy of the building and the success of the project as a whole.

We have a fabulous dance studio and meeting rooms as well as busy art spaces and studios. Local organisations looking for room hire or office rental will find City Works, Gloucester only a few minutes walk from the train station and city centre.

We have one of the largest community owned solar installations in the region. These help keep running costs to a minimum and benefit not only the GRC but also everyone who rents our offices or use the amenities. And for local small enterprise looking for environmental office rental, City Works might be a winning choice. And, of course, basing your organisation here helps our charitable work that in turn helps Gloucestershire communities.

Join our trustee board.

Are you passionate about arts, play and education? Are you keen to ensure that we resource local activities in a sustainable way?

The Gloucestershire Resource Centre is seeking people to join their Trustee Board to support the development of this important charity. We particularly welcome applications from people with disabilities, young people, LGBT people and people from a black, Asian or minority ethnic community. We are keen to ensure greater diversity on the Board to provide a broader perspective, with different networks, skills, and experiences into the organisation. Trustees work in a voluntary capacity but travel expenses can be met.

The GRC provides support for arts, play and education throughout Gloucestershire through a range of practical services including the Scrapstore, facilitating the re-use of surplus materials generated by businesses. The GRC also runs the City Works Community Hub, a successful model of community engagement for the county.

We are at an exciting time in the GRC’s journey and you would be joining a well-run, financially stable and unique charity within the county.
