The GRC has been awarded “Environmental Charity of the Year 2011″ by the Gloucestershire Assembly at their Gloscars event held on the 7th December 2011. Recognised for our work that impacts on the environment that includes the Scrapstore service promoting the re-use of business waste and reducing local landfill levels; our efforts to minimise our collective footprint at City Works along with all our tenants and visitors plus our new solar installation that is helping to increase renewable energy for the benefit of the wider community. The Trustees, staff, volunteers and everyone involved is grateful for this recognition and it will spur us on to try harder in the years to come. We would like to thank the Gloucestershire Assembly for the award.

IT’S OFFICIAL THE INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE AND WE ARE CONNECTED!

We are delighted to announce that our roof now has 192 solar panels installed and connected to the grid! Let the sun shine!

Members of the public, along with our members, users and tenants, will be given the opportunity to invest in the project through the issue of community shares, likely to be rolled out in Spring 2012. Financing the installation has been made possible by the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff, where the owners of small scale, low carbon electricity generators including solar plants, wind farms and hydro stations receive a guaranteed fee for selling surplus electricity to the National Grid. The £120,000 project is being managed by The Gloucestershire Energy Co-op. Members of the public will also be given the opportunity to invest anything from £250 to £20,000 and can expect to see an above average return on their investment so let us know if you are interested and we will ensure you are informed when the share issue is being offered.

We purchased City Works in 1995 and spent the following 6 years raising funding and carrying out the phased refurbishment of the building. Throughout the project we tried to ensure we re-used building materials wherever possible, radiators, doors, floor boards and to reconnect the ingenious well water pumping system feeding from the three wells on site. Re-using meant we saved money, avoided unnecessary waste and it also helped us to retain the character of the building.

As landlords, we are conscious of our environmental responsibilities and ask all our tenants to work with us to minimise our collective impact on the local environment. White paper, cardboard and ink cartridges etc are all recycled and minimal power and water usage is actively encouraged.

A document entitled “Working Together To Keep It Together” is the building’s watchword. We only use bio-degradable cleaning products in the building, Fair Trade refreshments for our Venue Hire and support local small businesses for all our catering needs.
